Service Projects

Service has been integral in CKI since the very beginning. It’s not just the first of the three tenets mentioned; it’s first in the hearts of club members everywhere. In his keynote address at the 1963 Circle K International Convention, Trustee John H. de Boisblanc asserted...

“As we begin this convention, let us relegate to a lesser position the clamor for larger membership… Let us make our all-prevailing consideration the desire to improve our ability to render service. Let this convention go down as the convention which renewed our faith in service… This concept of service of unselfish devotion to others is among the most noble of human endeavors.”

Dear Santa

Dear Santa is an annual event that NIU Circle K host. The meaning of this event is that we give children in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program an opportunity to experience Christmas that they might not experience at home. The board(president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer) all take a Saturday out of their busy schedules to buy gifts for all the children who participate in this program. We do many fundraising events to help raise money for the purchase of gifts.

We even go to local businesses and ask for donations. Our goal is to make this the best experience for all of these children. We wrap all the gifts up for each boy and girl and, of course, write “From Santa” on the presents. When the day of the event arrives, the members of Circle K arrive an hour ahead of time to help set up for this spectacular event. We put up a tree, Christmas decorations, and much more! We set up stations such as balloon animals, crafts, and snacks. The children soon arrive and begin doing all these fun and exciting things! Without them knowing, Santa arrives to deliver all the presents to the good little boys and girls. Santa makes his grand entrance, and once all the presents are distributed, the children unwrap their gifts and we get to see the huge smiles that begin to form on their faces. Dear Santa is a great way to get involved in the community and experience the grace Big Brothers/Big Sisters has to offer. It is truly an event that NIU Circle K never forgets.

NIU Cares Day

NIU Cares Day is a campus-wide day of community service. Volunteers comprised of NIU students, faculty, and staff come together once a year to complete projects that benefit DeKalb County’s not-for-profit organizations and community agencies as a way of thanking the community for their support of the institution and its mission. NIU volunteers are transported to locations around the county to spend the day planting, painting, cleaning, sorting, assisting with events, and various other tasks.

NIU Relay for Life

At Relay For Life events, communities across the globe come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much. The funds you raise truly make a difference in the fight against cancer – just ask one of the nearly 14 million cancer survivors who will celebrate another birthday this year!

Relay For Life teams camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a track or path at a local high school, park, or fairground. Events are up to 24 hours long, and because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times.

Bowl for Kids Sake

Bowl For Kids’ Sake is Big Brothers Big Sisters’ signature fundraiser. Each year half a million people across America come together to have fun and raise money to support Big Brothers Big Sisters as we change how children grow up! Bowl For Kids’ Sake is the perfect way for individuals to make an impact on our community- it only takes a little bit of effort to raise the money that is vital to our program’s success.

As a “thank you” for your support and enthusiasm, Big Brothers Big Sisters host a celebratory party at your local bowling center. No bowling expertise is required, only the willingness to share in our heartfelt and sincere thanks for helping us transform our community.
